Market Animal Sale will be held Wednesday, 6:00 PM in the Show Ring
Only Allegany County 4-H and FFA members are eligible.
- 4-H’er must be 8 years old as of January 1, current year.
- Animals must be owned and registered as project animals by May 1 (steers by Jan. 31) of the current year. Late entries may show for ribbons only.
- Two project animals of each species (beef, dairy steer, sheep, swine, goat, rabbit & poultry) are maximum entries allowed per member. Two per member allowed in the sale if both qualify. Members with two animals must make extra efforts to secure buyers.
- Project market animals may be placed in classes according to weight (heavy, intermediate, medium, or light). Judging will be by the Danish system. SEE RULES AND REGULATIONS # 22.
- Members or parents may buy their own animal only by giving their bid in writing to the Auctioneer prior to sale time. No type of bye-bidding will be permitted or recognized.
- To more widely publicize the Junior Market Animal Sale, each member will be charged a small sale commission based on percentage of gross sale receipts. All members will pay a rate determined by the 4-H Livestock Advisory Committee.
- Each member is expected to work actively toward securing buyers for his or her market animals.
- Each 4-H’er/FFA member must exhibit his/her own animal. The decision of the judge, with respect to placing and awarding of ribbons, will be respected by all participants. Unmanageable animals may be excused at the discretion of the show committee.
- Participation in the Junior Market Animal Show and Sale implies acceptance of the policies and rules by participating members and parents.
- These rules and policies are intended to supplement other rules in the Allegany County Fair premium book. In case of conflict these rules take precedence, after consultation with the Director in charge and fair board officers.
- Health regulations apply to all cattle, sheep, goat, swine, rabbit, and poultry. See Livestock Health Requirements.
(Note: All Market Animals to be sold must have the Rabies done 21 days prior to the county fair.)
- Steers, lambs, hogs, and goats to be auctioned will be weighed, starting 3:00 PM Sunday. Members must be present to help weigh animals. No filling allowed. (Not to be fed from noon until weighed.)
- This section is open to purebred, grade, or crossbred animals. No bulls, stags, boars, or rams allowed.
- All sale lambs must be born Jan. 1st or later of the current year. All Market Lambs should be slick shorn within 1 week of opening day of Fair and should weigh a minimum of 76 lbs.
- Pigs: Must be born after Jan. 1st and weigh a minimum of 180 lbs.
- Beef: Must be born on or after January 1st of the previous year. Minimum weight 950 pounds. Beef breeds only
Dairy steers: MINIMUM WEIGHT 1000 pounds.. All DAIRY Breeds
Dairy Beef Steers: Minimum weight 950 pounds.
- Market Goats: Must be born after October 1st and weigh a minimum of 50 pounds.
- Market Rabbits: A pen of 3 meat rabbits must be 70 days or younger prior to the county fair of the current year and should weigh a minimum of 3 pounds.
- Market Poultry: A pen of 2 meat chickens must be hatched 6-8 weeks prior to the county fair of current year and weigh 8-11 pounds per bird (16-22 pounds per pair). Limit of 2 pens of chickens. A pen of 1 meat turkey must be hatched in January prior to county fair of current year. Tom must weigh 30-35 pounds, and Hen must weigh 18-24 pounds. Limit of 2 pens of turkeys.
20. When the Market Poultry Show occurs outside of the regular fair, Market Poultry exhibitors must exhibit a poster on their
entries during the fair in order to receive premiums.
